What this scanner is really for
A pragmatic value choice for varied object sizes when you do not specifically need blue-laser capture.
The key is to read Up to 0.02 mm as a manufacturer’s best-case specification, not a guaranteed result on every surface. Calibration, object finish, tracking stability, markers and operator technique all affect usable geometry.

Otter is a dual-range NIR scanner aimed at users who move between small, medium and larger objects. With no blue-laser mode, it favors simple feature-based capture over specialist laser workflows.

Where capture gets difficult
It can capture many dark objects, but highly glossy metal, transparent parts and featureless geometry remain difficult. Scan spray, markers or controlled lighting may still be necessary.

Capture is only half the workflow
It uses CrealityScan on Windows or macOS for acquisition and post-processing. The standard output set fits 3D printing and mesh workflows, while CAD reconstruction remains a separate step.
Mesh export is not the same as editable CAD. Reverse-engineering projects may still require surface reconstruction, dimensional constraints and verification in separate software.

Is it worth the price?
Otter is one of the more balanced lower-cost choices for general scanning. Pay more for Raptor or MetroX only when laser detail and surface adaptability are central requirements.

Questions before buying
Is Otter good for small objects?
It covers smaller objects better than many large-area NIR scanners, but laser-focused models are usually stronger for tiny mechanical detail.
Does Otter need a computer?
Yes. It is not a standalone scanner.
