Standalone vs Tethered 3D Scanners

What changes when capture, processing and power live on the scanner instead of a phone or workstation.

Wireless is not the same as standalone

A scanner can send data without a cable and still depend on a phone or computer for processing. A true standalone workflow includes its own processor, storage, display and battery for capture. Some devices can also fuse, mesh and review the result on the scanner.

This distinction matters because the connected device becomes part of the cost and reliability of the system. Confirm whether the scanner can start a project, finish processing and export a usable file without another computer.

What standalone changes in the field

Removing the laptop simplifies work around vehicles, sculptures, museums and customer sites. The operator carries fewer cables and can review coverage immediately. A bright integrated display can also make it easier to see tracking feedback while moving.

The tradeoffs are weight, heat, battery limits and onboard computing capacity. Large projects may still process faster on a desktop, and a depleted battery can stop the entire capture system rather than only an accessory.

What tethered scanners still do well

A tethered scanner can use a more powerful workstation and larger display. This is useful for dense mechanical scans, extended sessions and workflows that already end in desktop CAD or inspection software. The capture head can also remain lighter because it does not carry a full computer.

The real cost is cable management and workstation requirements. A scanner that advertises high frame rates on a recommended GPU may perform differently on an older laptop. Read both minimum and recommended requirements.

Phone-assisted devices sit in the middle

Phone-assisted scanners can be compact and convenient, especially when the phone supplies the display, storage and processing. Compatibility is the main risk. Supported operating systems do not guarantee that every phone has enough compute, memory or the correct connection mode.

For example, Creality states that Pika requires a phone, tablet or computer during use despite its own screen and battery. This is a portable hybrid workflow, not a fully independent scanner.

Choose by capture location and project size

Choose standalone when rapid field setup and computer-free capture matter more than the lightest head. Choose tethered when a workstation is always present, project density is high or desktop processing is central to the job. Choose phone-assisted hardware when compact carry is essential and the supported device list fits what you already own.

Do not pay for independence without testing the full project size. A five-minute demo scan says little about storage, battery, thermal behavior and processing time on a long capture.
