How to Scan Black and Reflective Objects

A practical guide to exposure, laser modes, markers, removable coating and realistic expectations.

Why the surface fails

Black materials absorb projected light. Glossy surfaces reflect it away from the cameras or create unstable highlights. Transparent objects transmit the pattern instead of returning a stable surface signal.

Choose the most suitable optical mode

Blue laser modes often perform better on dark or metallic parts because concentrated laser lines can produce a stronger controlled signal. They do not make every glossy or transparent object preparation-free.

Control the environment

Reduce direct sunlight, avoid moving highlights and adjust exposure without saturating bright areas. A stable turntable or scanner path helps keep the remaining features trackable.

Use reversible preparation

Where permitted, removable scanning spray can create a matte diffuse surface. Reflective markers solve tracking, not surface visibility. Confirm that any coating is safe for the object and clean it according to its instructions.
