How to Scan a Person: Comfort, Motion and Useful Detail

How body scanning differs from object scanning, including pose, capture speed, hair, clothing, privacy and output choices.

Motion is the first constraint

A person cannot remain perfectly still. Breathing, balance, facial movement and clothing all change during capture, so speed and tracking stability usually matter more than the finest small-part setting. A wider field of view helps complete the body before movement accumulates.

Choose a stable pose that the subject can hold comfortably. Keep arms slightly separated from the torso and legs apart enough to avoid fused surfaces. Explain the route before starting so the subject knows when to remain still.

Use a body-appropriate optical mode

Infrared structured light is common for people because it covers larger areas and is used by scanners with dedicated body modes. Verify the manufacturer’s eye-safety classification and operating instructions for any device used around faces.

A blue-laser mode designed for mechanical parts is rarely the efficient first choice for a full body. The surface behavior, marker requirements and capture area may all work against the job.

Hair and clothing are geometry problems

Dark hair can absorb projected light and fine strands move during scanning. Tie or flatten loose hair where appropriate and expect simplified geometry. Shiny fabrics, transparent materials and loose clothing can also create holes or shifting surfaces.

For fit applications, scan clothing that represents the intended use and document compression or posture. A visually convincing avatar is not automatically a measurement-grade body model.

Plan the path and background

Walk smoothly around the subject while keeping a consistent distance. Capture difficult areas such as under the chin, around arms and between the legs with enough overlap. Avoid repeatedly rescanning moving regions because mixed poses create doubled surfaces.

Use diffuse indoor lighting and enough space to move safely. A turntable can simplify the path for some systems, but the subject must be comfortable and stable while rotating.

Treat body data as personal data

A full-body or face scan can be identifiable and sensitive. Obtain clear consent, explain where files will be stored and limit access. Delete raw data when it is no longer required and follow the privacy rules relevant to the application and location.

Choose the final output before capture: a color avatar, a printable figurine, garment reference and orthotic workflow have different detail and validation needs. Healthcare use requires qualified processes beyond a general scanner guide.
